Few dogs were as patient as Scout. Certainly, none had his balancing skills.

Made famous for his ability to do absolutely nothing while owner Jen Gillen placed items on his head, Scout passed away Wednesday, June 29.

“Last Wednesday after a tough year so far, Scout has passed peacefully. It’s taken a week for me to find the right wording to break the news and I don’t even think this does him justice,” Gillen posted to her Instagram account, stuffonscoutshead. “I wish you all could have given him a hug as a final goodbye, there would have been a line as far as the eye could see – I swear he was fueled through the last few months by love entirely.”

Last Wednesday after a tough year so far, Scout has passed peacefully. It’s taken a week for me to find the right wording to break the news and I don’t even think this does him justice. I wish you all could have given him a hug as a final goodbye, there would have been a line as far as the eye could see – I swear he was fuelled through the last few months by love entirely. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀He had recently been recovering fantastic and then suddenly he wasn’t doing well at all and he just didn’t have the same fight in him as before; he had come through some crazy circumstances all the while being fantastic, alerting staff in the hospital about other dogs, bouncing back from surgery hours later to go for a walk, shaking out his ear surgery buttons after the vet said to keep them in a bit longer, being the most behaved gentleman and a strong Viking of a pup this whole time and STILL loved seeing all his friends in the vet up until the very last day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Without Scout I wouldn’t have had the chance to get to know so many of you and for that alone I am so thankful. He had a knack for bringing people together. Celebrate Scout’s life by saving one just like him; speak out about how barbaric and outdated Breed Specific Legislations are; kiss your Pitties on their noses for us today; don’t judge a dog by their breed; recognize dogs up for adoption aren’t broken! I could have never met a more perfect dog for me. He was a poster dog for what I believed in, together we made it possible to give back to causes I believed so strongly in. I wouldn’t be in such a good shape today if I didn’t have such an amazing crew of friends supporting me. It was the best little send off a Viking could have asked for. 💖

Gillen said Scout, a rescued pit bull, had been doing well before his health declined drastically. But even after surgery, he remained happy and resilient.

Scout leaves behind a world of saddened fans. His website, social media accounts, and book, “Lessons in Balance: A Dog’s Reflections on Life,” have reached millions. And the proceeds from Scout’s work have provided some serious support to the nonprofit Bullies in Need. But lest the Internet grind to a halt for lack of this lovable, boxy-headed boy, Gillen is continuing to raise awareness of pit bulls as kind and selfless animals.

Parallel to Scout and Gillen’s work, pit bull education and breed specific legislation laws are on the minds of many recently. Along with outrage in some major Canadian cities, pit bull bans have been making life hard for certain people in the U.S., too.
