Your Heart Will Melt When You Meet SmileyThe Animal Rescue Site
Smiley, a golden retriever born without eyes and dwarfism, is taking the internet by storm. This adorable pooch has become an overnight sensation.
Smiley had an inauspicious start to his life. He was born into a puppy mill and suffered years of neglect.
In 2004, he was adopted by his present owner, Joanne George, who runs Training the K9 Way, a dog training service in Stouffville, Canada.
Though it was initially tough for Smiley to learn the structures and rituals outside of the puppy mill, this tenacious dog kept trying his best. A young great Dane named Tyler helped him adjust.
Once Smiley adjusted to his new life in Joanne’s home, she decided she had to share this amazing animal with her community.
Now, Smiley is part of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program. He visits nursing homes and listens to special needs kids as they learn to read.
“People were so drawn to him, so inspired by him.” Joanne George told CBS News. “I realized this dog has to be a therapy dog — I have to share him.”
Smiley has become an integral part of Joanne’s life. “He came on my first date with me. He was my ring bearer at my wedding. Then I was pregnant,” George said to CBS News. “He’s changed my life.”
Smiley helps us all remember that disabilities and a traumatic past are never what defines us. Every day is a fresh, new day to seize upon life’s wonderful opportunities.
