Rescued Dog Becomes First Canine to Climb Mount Everest

Dog makes news by climbing Mount Everest.

A dog has recently made history by becoming the first canine to scale Mount Everest, according to the NY Daily News. He climbed the iconic mountain with his owner, Joanne Lefson. What makes this story even more remarkable is that Rupee is a rescue dog who was found in bad shape at a dump.

"The little fellow had heart, I could tell that, but he was very weak from having no food and water for days, perhaps weeks," Lefson told the source.

She took in the dog, who made a swift recovery, which led her to take him on this expedition to the base camp of Mount Everest. After getting approval from the animal's vet, Lefson set out to climb the mountain. It took them 10 days to reach the camp with Dev Argarwel, a filmmaker who documented their journey.

Lefson took extra precautions to ensure Rupee would be safe throughout the trip. And just in case it became apparent that her furry friend couldn't make the journey, she brought along an extra porter to take him back down the mountain.

Lefson is a world traveler who has made headlines before, while touring the globe with her previous dog, Oscar. The trip was originally meant to be taken with Oscar, but he passed away in a car accident before it took place. However, while he was alive, Oscar helped spread the word about animals in need during his travels with Lefson to popular landmarks.
