Dog of the Day

Pongo’s Journey

He’s not a dalmatian, but Pongo is one amazing dog. Read below about how he overcame an encounter with an automobile to become a sweet and loveable pooch.

I was driving home from work one day and saw this small puppy in the middle of a highly traveled road. He had been hit by a car, and at first I thought he was dead. I passed him, but looked in my rear-view mirror just in time to see him lift his head and flap his ears, so I knew he was still alive.

I knew then that I had to save him from being hit by another car; so I turned the truck around, drove back to where he was, and put him into the passenger seat of my truck. I took him home and called my veterinarian, who said to watch him overnight and bring him into the office in the morning. So I did. It turned out he had a broken back leg, which the veterinarian pinned.

The next day, I picked the puppy up from the veterinarian and brought him home. The children who lived next door approached me and the puppy in my backyard one day, and we discussed what to name him. They thought of the name “Pongo.” I liked it so that was what I called him.

Pongo grew up to be the sweetest dog. Whenever he got within a few feet of me, his tongue started flapping and I knew I was in for some slobbery kisses, which I thought was his way of saying, “Thank you for saving me.” That was how he greeted me every time. He was sweet to everyone he met — no one was a stranger.

I noticed that the injury he received as a puppy, when hit by the car, had come back to haunt him in his senior years. Eventually he wasn’t able to stand up on his own. It was then I had to make the decision to have him euthanized. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I lost my buddy that day, but the memories remain with me and I will never forget his sweet disposition and those slobbery kisses.
