A 12-year-old black Labrador, named Polo, was shot in the face Monday night after a burglar invaded her family’s home in Englewood, Colorado. The family came home the next morning to see their poor dog lying on the ground, bleeding profusely.

They rushed her to VRCC Emergency Hospital right away, but with the extent of her injuries, they weren’t sure if she’d make it. According to the veterinary dentist, “it looked like a bomb had gone off.”

The gunshot shattered Polo’s jaw, several teeth, and nearly severed her tongue. In the X-rays, they could still see bullet fragments in her mouth.

Vets were able to remove the tooth fragments, the remaining bullet pieces, and salvage her tongue. She has since had two reconstruction surgeries and is miraculously recovering well!

Despite her injuries and this horribly frightening ordeal, Polo hasn’t stopped wagging her tail. She’s extremely resilient and is always so happy to see everyone.

Luckily, the bullet only went through her nose and mouth and not near her brain.

“The path of the bullet narrowly missed two major arteries in her jaw bone, and she easily could have bled out and died, and it’s amazing that she’s still with us,” veterinary dentist Dr. Don Beebe told Fox 31.

A miracle, indeed!

As for the burglary, the investigation is ongoing as police continue to search for the suspect.
