Adoption program helps animals find homes.

Experts estimate that about 70 million dogs in the U.S. are homeless. Some live in shelters, others live on the streets, but the number is daunting either way. Animal shelters attempt to find loving homes for many of these could-be pets, but getting the word out about a new dog isn’t always easy, especially for shelters that rely on donations.

Home for Hope is an organization that helps shelters garner attention for their adoptable pets by teaming up with furniture stores. The organization photographs shelter dogs and places life-size cutouts of each animal in furniture showrooms. Each animal cutout wears a tag with its name and a Quick Response Code that customers can scan for more information. The idea is that as people shop for items to complete their homes, they’ll see that a pet can fit into their living space.

IKEA was the first company to join forces with Home for Hope, but the ranks have expanded to include Journey East, Foundry and others. Each store carries cutouts of pets cared for by the Animal Lovers League and Save Our Street Dogs.

By going to the Home for Hope’s website, viewers can see which pets have been adopted and which are still in need of a caring family.
