Golden Doodle Therapy Dog Roams The Halls Of This Hospital And Puts Smiles On Patients’ FacesAshley Maisano
Every Monday for the past three-and-a-half years, Dixie the golden doodle has roamed the floors of McLeod Health as their only therapy dog.
Being in a hospital can become very depressing and/or stressful. Dixie visits all of the patients at the hospital and helps them feel at ease.
“Having Dixie come and visit, it releases endorphins and it actually helps alleviate some of their pain. It helps lower blood pressure and it helps our patients with depression,” Whittney Godwin, McLeod’s Patient Care Supervisor, told wpde.
The patients love when Dixie enters their room and they always greet her with a huge smile. They said visits from Dixie help them forget what’s going on for the moment and makes them feel more at home.
When Dixie isn’t working, she enjoys her life at home with her owner, Anna Cusack. She is just like any other dog and loves playing, going for walks, and swimming in the pool.
Soon, Dixie will be getting surgery of her own to fix her hips. The ball doesn’t fit into the socket correctly because it’s slightly deformed, so they’re going to operate to replace her hip. But for now, Dixie will continue to roam the halls and make her patients smile.
Dogs truly make everything better and are definitely good at cheering people up. Dixie is living proof!
