Reality Versus Imagination: What Being a Dog Parent Really Means!

Dogs become part of the family so quickly that it’s sometimes easy to forget just how much they change your life. Despite the many hassles and inconveniences of owning a dog, however, they make it all worth it at the end of the day. You probably had dreams of a well-behaved dog frolicking obediently at your side, playing fetch in the park and going on pleasant outings to the beach.

The dog would sleep on the floor, of course, and stay off the furniture so that your house would stay clean and tidy. Maybe you carefully researched healthy foods and snacks for your dog, planning to only feed her the finest foods. Perhaps you even planned to do yoga together.

Most dog lovers have been there, and then reality hits. There’s the seemingly endless training that goes out the window the moment your hyperactive puppy catches sight of a squirrel. You throw the ball at the dog park, and your dog simply watches it sail over his head. Worse, maybe he catches it and then refuses to come back as you chase him fruitlessly around the dog park.

Staying out of bed goes right out the window, too, as your dog looks at you with those big, sad eyes, and you just can’t say no. Your dog yoga starts looking more like wrestling as your pooch decides it’s playtime.

Then there’s the food. It’s hard to turn down your best friend when she’s begging for a bite of that junk food you’re snacking on. Soon your pooch is eating french fries and potato chips, too, though hopefully only in moderation.

No one ever tells you how much poop there is, either — and it’s always at the worst time, such as during those tranquil picnics on the beach.

Sometimes, you might even wonder whether it’s worth it. To answer that question, simply come home after a long day at work, and feel your spirit lifts as your dog joyfully greets you at the door. Despite all the difficulties of owning a dog, it’s hard to imagine life without them. And believe it or not, you really can train your dog to do yoga.
