Raising four children can be challenging. After fielding many requests for pets throughout the years, we decided to discuss getting a dog. With persistent allergies, we did our homework and thought a Shih Tzu might be a good fit for our family. We were committed to saving a dog and decided that when the time was right we would check our local shelter. We wanted to make sure that we had the time between work, school, and extracurricular activities to be good animal parents.

After a rare weekend away with my husband, I came across a post on Facebook from our local shelter. There were several dogs rescued from a puppy mill that needed homes. On our way back into town, I called the shelter and was informed that they had a Shih Tzu who was looking for a home. However, they were about to close for the weekend. I convinced them to stay open for a few minutes longer as we sped to meet the dog.

When my husband and I arrived, the shelter staff brought us a furry and very scared Shih Tzu. I held her for just a few minutes, and fell in love instantly. We jumped in and decided to adopt her. On the way home, I held her and she licked all the buttons on my sweater. After that, we agreed “Buttons” would be a fitting name.

We surprised the kids with her when we arrived home. Amidst tears of joy, Buttons immediately became the center of our family. We now spend time together with Buttons and laugh at her sweet personality. We have united as family to make sure this sweet angel has our undivided attention. Our 8 pounds of love has helped our family slow down and enjoy time together.
