Bomb-Sniffing Dog Becomes Safety Mascot

Police dog helping to maintain the safety of the citizens.

Nitro is Southern Illinois's newest bomb-sniffing dog. However, the German shepherd is doing much more – he also has become the face of safety. According to the Belleville News-Democrat, Nitro and his handler, Deputy Matt Dobbler, met with students at St. Teresa School in Belleville, Ill. During the visit, the children learned not to talk to strangers and safety tips they can use at home and at school.

"He was trained in Northern Iowa and is trained just to sniff out explosives," Dobbler told the source. "One of the sheriff's key points is public safety and safety of the children. We will be at schools and courthouses and many other places."

Nitro is just 4 years old and has many years of service ahead of him. However, when the time comes, the canine will retire and need a loving home. Military and law enforcement working dogs seek adoption just like shelter pets.

SaveAVet.org is dedicated to finding good homes for these animals and is offering free adoption for qualified applicants. The organization is also seeking people to raise a puppy from 12 weeks until 6 months of age, when the canine will start training to become part of a new generation of service dogs.
