A cat named after The Notorious B.I.G. was recently shot multiple times at close range, but it wasn’t ready to die.

After “Biggie” the cat went missing on Nov. 3, owner Nicole Crandell originally thought he was taken by a fox, CBC News reports. Almost three weeks later, a call from a local veterinarian told of an even ghastlier fate.

Biggie was found alive, a few miles away from home, shot several times with a pellet gun.

“He had pellets in his head, his cheek, his neck, his jaw, his back,” Crandell told the CBC.

With their pet home safe and on the mend, possibly experiencing “life after death,” the Crandells are grateful for the miracle that kept their cat alive. The violent incident that nearly took his life signals a darker worry, however.

“The vet said the way the pellets were in his head, it’s like a pellet gun was held up to his head and his body … they were doing this on purpose,” Crandell said.

Biggie was taken to the nearest SPCA, where the pellets were removed from his body, and he was bandaged up. There do not appear to be any signs of long-term damage, and Biggie is expected to make a full recovery.

Perhaps someday he’ll wake up and think it was all a dream.
