A Nose For Recovery: Trial Therapy Helps Dog Walk Again

ARS_Blog_DTOP_BelowTitle_300x250

Jasper, a ten-year-old dachshund (shown in the video), was paralyzed after he was hit by a car. The spinal injury caused his hind legs to stop working, and he needed help getting around. But Jasper is now walking on his own again, thanks to a test of a new trial treatment at Cambridge University.

According to the BBC, thirty-four dogs were part of the trial, in which healthy olfactory ensheathing cells from the lining of the nose were extracted, grown in the lab, and then implanted at the site of injury. There, they helped some vital nerves regenerate. Like Jasper, many of the dogs that received the treatment were able to regain some use of their hind legs.

Jasper’s miracle recovery is a fantastic scientific advance. With time, more study, and good fortune, other handicapped dogs may also find themselves racing around like puppies again.
