I didn’t believe in love at first sight until I set eyes on my dog, Rue. She was a tiny, scared, and adorable little puppy who was found on the side of a country road along with five of her siblings. We took her home, gave her a bath, and immediately fell in love.

She had me wrapped around her finger from day one, and now I proudly identify as a “Crazy Dog Lady”. I go to the pet store more than the grocery story (so she can join me), spend more on toys for her than I do on clothes for myself, and am currently in the process of planning her first birthday party — and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you have a similar story, you may also be edging closely into Dog Person territory. Here are 10 easy ways to tell if you (proudly) fit the mold of a “Crazy Dog Person“.

10) You refer to yourself as your dog’s “mom” or “dad” and think that it’s totally normal. (Because it is.)

9. You’ve gotten used to spelling out words instead of saying them, and catch yourself doing it even when your dog isn’t around.

“I had to w-a-l-k to work today because my c-a-r is in the shop.”

8. Your morning alarm is a wet nose in your face, and a wagging tail knocking against everything in your bedroom.

7. You prefer to share your bed with your dog, even though you know you will only get a few inches of free space.
